Photographing collections for

MonLife Heritage's Anti-Racism Wales Project

Art Works recently assisted MonLife Heritage with photographing artefacts from their collections as part of their Anti-Racist Wales project "Researching, Re-examining and Reclaiming: the heritage and culture of Monmouthshire's Black, Asian and Ethnic minority communities". The project aims to improve interpretation of the collections so that they honestly tell their complex stories, better representing their links to slavery, colonialism and empire and respect their impact on communities past and present.

MonLife Heritage are currently looking to recruit for a new team member to play a key role in the project. You can find out more about the available position here:

University of Bristol

Celebrating Women in the Wills Memorial Building

Art Works has recently assisted the University of Bristol in transporting and hanging an additional work in the Great Hall of the Wills Memorial Building. Until 2018, the Great Hall mainly displayed portraits of previous Vice-Chancellors and never before had women graced the walls of the space. However, in the year which marked a centenary since the first British women won the vote an initiative was launched to to redress the balance and celebrate many incredible women have helped to shape the University. You can read more about the ongoing project by following the link below:

Art Works Exhibition Services Showreel 2022

Here's a few highlights from our filming work from the last year.

We've developed a range of new digital services including photography and film making in order to make events and exhibitions more accessible to the public. So far we have undertaken projects for our clients including object documentation, installation & project documentation as well as educational films.

We are looking to broaden our portfolio to include promotional images and films for temporary and permanent exhibitions which we feel may be helpful for our clients digital presence. We'd love to do more work like this and we would love to hear from you if you have a project you would like documented.

Meanings and Messages

Mission Gallery & Association for Contemporary Jewellery

19 November - 21 December 2022

We had the pleasure of assisting with the transport of this marvellous exhibition this month:

"The exhibition focuses on brooches, as they form the ideal jewellery archetype for conveying meanings and messages. Brooches can be subversive and are often used by people in the public eye, political figures, or sovereignty to convey important messages."

It has been relocated and installed at Museum of Cardiff to be exhibited to the public in a suitable setting. The display is now open to the public as part of the museum's Protest exhibition.

Visit: https://cardiffmuseum.com for visitor details

September 2021

During September, Art Works Exhibition Services assisted with the collection and delivery of "Hedger and Ditcher: Portrait of William Lloyd" to National Museum Wales. The painting now hangs in place of a portrait of slave owner Sir Thomas Picton. The portrait at the Cardiff museum has been put in storage and two artists with Trinidadian roots have been commissioned to "re-frame" the legacy to give more context about his life.

Transportation of "Salem" by Sydney Curnow Vosper.

October 2019

During October Art Works crated and collected one of the most famous images in Welsh art from Rogers Jones & Co Auctioneers in Cardiff and transported it to National Library Wales where it will remain on display as a cherished part of the Welsh public collection.

Meri Huws, vice president of the library, said: "This priceless treasure could have easily been lost by the nation and this would have been a great travesty."

The painting depicts Sian Owen in a shawl entering Capel Salem, Cefn Cymerau in Gwynedd.

The artist has denied the shawl contains an image of the devil in its folds but this did not stop it becoming the painting's main talking point over the years.

Ruthin Craft Centre Changeover

October 2019
During October, our team  undertook the transportation and technical assistance for changeover of exhibitions at the Ruthin Craft Centre in Denbighshire. These exhibitions will run from 19 October 2019 – 12 January 2020. Here are the details of what is currently on show in the galleries:
  • Gallery 1: Lettering : Art & Illusion Lettering : Art & Illusion depicts lettering that is created by hand through calligraphy, letter cutting, painting and engraving. Writing is a most ancient art form and for millennia the art of the scribe was held in great esteem. The professional scribe in Arabic, Japanese, Tibetan and Egyptian scripts, as well as what we would now consider a western hand, proffered the foundations of formal languages as we know them today; from pictograms and hieroglyphics to italic and copperplate scripts, realised in stone, glass and metal and on parchment, vellum and paper. Through the work of the selected artists and makers, we can study the techniques, ancient in their origins, yet timelessly original in their expression, created with contemporary style and sensitivity.
  • Gallery 2 & 3: Neil Bottle : All That Remains A new body of work, as Neil celebrates 30 years as a textile designer. Neil’s fascinating textile hangings in All That Remains are inspired by family photographs, a sense of time passing and how we remember things – in both real and false memories. The textile prints are accompanied by personal, sentimental objects that were the starting point for many of the stories Neil is telling – ‘I like the idea of objects that have history embedded in them,’ he says.

"Agatha Christie: An Unfinished Portrait" at Torre Abbey

September 2019
Art Works undertook the packing, transportation and installation of Agatha Christie: Unfinished Portrait: A Life in Photographs, offers an insight into the life of world famous author at Torre Abbey.
Featuring photographs from the author’s private collection, the exhibition illustrates the life behind the works of the most widely published author of all time.
Each image is accompanied by a quote in Christie’s own words, drawn from both published works and unpublished personal correspondence, beautifully capturing her thoughts and feelings from early childhood, through both marriages and her international adventures, to her years as a world famous author.
A timeline will sit alongside the pictures and mark the key milestones in Christie’s life, including the first performance of the world’s longest running play, The Mousetrap, and the publication of definitive works such as Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None.
Open until Sunday 24 November 2019
